Andrew Stashefsky, Undergraduate Student, Truman State University ' 10

My semester in India was one continual learning experience; from the individualized classroom setting, to the frequent explorative trips around India, to just adjusting to life in a country whose culture and norms are greatly different than your own, the entire trip was a lesson in learning.

The faculty at the International Center for Management and India Studies in doubt influenced the successful nature of my experience.  For example, faculty made sure you were aware of opportunities outside of the classroom, in addition to being gracious enough to invite you for dinner at their home.  Whenever it was needed, they also aided the adjustment to life in India, be it in the form or water, food, transportation, or medical attention.

Personally, one of the most gratifying aspects of the trip for me was its responsibility for exposing me to the intensive study and application of various spiritual philosophies.  It was amazing to witness the rich tapestry of Indian spirituality when I come from such a predominantly Christian culture.

My Study Abroad trip to India, with ICMIS was the most fantastic trip I have ever been on.  I learned so much more about my own country from traveling abroad, while absorbing the culture of a totally different world.  I would absolutely recommend this trip to every college student; in fact, I believe that all college students should experience a trip like this before they graduate!

Kyle Schroeder, B.E. Civil Engineering, University of Vanderbilt '10

Trying to summarize my experience in India is rather difficult for me, probably because there is really nothing in my previous experience that I can compare it to. For the first time in my life this small town boy from a Florida fishing village was thrust into a place where the people looked different, thought different, and acted differently than anything I was used to and I loved it. Through my awkwardness and my discomfort I was able to really finally look at myself with no distractions. I was able to understand myself in ways that I was never able to. I talked with remote villagers and stayed in luxury hotels. I saw monuments that were constructed before America had even been discovered and just down the street were the factories making the latest discoveries in technology. Never before in my life had I seen the history and present and future so effortlessly blended together. I saw many wonders on the trip, technical, cultural, and natural. Even though I left seeing incredible wonders on the outside, it was the wonder inside, the realization of me and the potential I have, that I will always remember form India. I will always have India.

ICMIS Adds Value to MBA Student Body

Clayton State’s School of Business Study Abroad Program to India

On May 25, 2009, six Clayton State students completed the International Seminar on the Indian Business Environment, the School’s first Study Abroad Program in India. The program included travel to Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, where students visited historic places and palaces, such as the Taj Mahal.  Then, they traveled to Bangalore, known as the Silicon Valley of India.  After morning lectures about India’s socio-economic systems and global trade, the students visited a number of corporations, including SAP, Nokia, Thompson Reuter, Indian Tobacco Company, and Sabre International. Experiences like visiting the Taj Mahal and riding elephants in Jaipur to the Amber Fort, a palace fortress, were a few of the cultural highlights for the study abroad group, but they found the corporate lectures and site visits to be the most rewarding aspect of the trip. Students decided to invest in this study abroad program for a variety of different reasons.  Ragland’s thoughts sum up a number of the students’ sentiments:

Sakonja, Ragland MBA student of Clayton State University Business School

“I am truly changed in every way be-cause of my study abroad experience in India, host ICMIS” says Sakonja Ragland, an MBA student in Clayton State’s School of Business.  I understand the importance of travel and experiencing different cultures in business.  I made a commitment to stay open to the possibilities of what the world has to offer in aiding and enhancing my educational experience.  This program gave me the confidence that I needed to prove that I am learning enough in Clayton State’s School of Business to prepare me for a leadership role in business.

Sherlene Nelson, MBA student of Clayton State University Business School

As a graduate student of Clayton State University in America, I found my 16 day trip to India totally amazing! The five students, Dean from my university and I were treated very well: First class hotels, 5 course meals, top rated excursion, invaluable education and friendly tour guides. I highly recommend this trip to every university worldwide.

T’Leen Campbell MBA student of Clayton State University Business School

“The knowledge I received from these visits could not have been learned through books,” said T’Leen Campbell, an MBA student who will graduate this August.  “Our hosts ICMIS, received and treated our group as honored guests.  Each organization allowed us to tour their facility, meet staff and ask as many questions as we desired about any subject.  They were very gracious with their time.”

Micelle Melton, MBA student of Clayton State University Business School

"The ICMIS study abroad program is the reason why I fell in love with India. It was a wonderful experience that opened my eyes to a beautiful and warm-hearted country with a rich cultural legacy. Our Tour Coordinator was a delight to be around, and her vast knowledge was indispensible during our historic excursions. Our lectures and company site visits added another layer to understanding India as a country with boundless economic potential. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone wanting to really experience India."
